I love frequent coffee’s decaf and half caf beans! I make them every day and you can they’re really high-quality which is hard to find with decaf coffee. Hits the spot perfectly! 👌🏼 I usually get the decaf ones but as I am a new mom, I needed a little boost of caffeine but without the jitters. This half caf was just as flavorful as the rest I’ve tried from Frequent Coffee. I brew it as espresso and it’s been great! What is half caf coffee?
A blend of regular and decaf beans, roasted and packed together so every cup lands in the same place. Ours is a 50/50 split. You get the full flavor and ritual of a real cup with about half the caffeine, which is why it works for the times of day when a full cup is too much and decaf is not quite enough.
How much caffeine is in it?
Roughly 45 to 50mg per 8oz cup, against 90 to 100mg in a standard cup of coffee. Those are typical ranges rather than measured values for this batch, and the actual amount varies with dose, grind, and brew method.
What does it taste like?
Chocolate, stone fruit, and brown sugar. Medium roast, rounded and balanced, with enough fruit brightness to keep it interesting. It is built to taste like a proper cup of coffee rather than a watered down one, which is the point.
Who is half caf actually for?
Three groups, mostly. People cutting back gradually, since dropping straight to decaf tends to bring on withdrawal headaches. People who are sensitive to caffeine but do not want to give up the lift entirely. And people who want a second or third cup in the afternoon without lying awake at night.
Is half caf just decaf with extra steps?
No, and the difference matters if you actually want the caffeine. Decaf leaves a trace amount, roughly 2 to 7mg a cup. Half caf leaves you with a real, if smaller, dose. If you want zero lift, go decaf. If you want a genuine but gentler one, this is the one.
How should I brew it?
Anything you like. Drip, pour over, French press, AeroPress, cold brew, and espresso all work well with a medium roast this balanced. Half the beans in the bag are decaffeinated, which makes them more brittle and prone to producing fines, so nudge the grind slightly coarser than you would for a full caf coffee. Not as far as you would for a straight decaf, since only half the blend needs the adjustment.
How long should I let it rest?
2 to 4 days from the roast date. Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for the first few days, which interferes with even extraction.
What sizes does it come in, and can I subscribe?
